DRINK RECIPE OF THE WEEK! THE CLASSIC COSMOPOLITAN The classic cosmopolitan is as ubiquitous in today's trendy bars as faux Fendi bags and cheezy pick-up lines. Knowing how to make the perfect cosmo can separate you from the "wanna-bes" and will have your guests clamoring for more! To create the perfect classic cosmopolitan, you will need: Citrus vodka (preferably Absolut Citron, Ketel One Citroen, or your favorite citrus vodka - Don't go cheap!) Triple sec (Cointreau if you're going top-shelf...it's worth it!) Cranberry juice (try to avoid reconstituted juices or cranberry juice "cocktail", which is loaded with sugar) Lime juice (squeeze a fresh lime...it's oh-so-much better!) Lemon peel (for garnish - you want it to look pretty, right?) Chilled cocktail (martini) glass (not sure about this? Click here for my guide to barware) Cocktail Shaker (buying one and wondering which is best? Click here) Fill your cocktail shaker 1/2 full with cubed ice. For the classic cosmo, just remember 3-2-1.
Confused as to what is a "part" Combine all ingredients in your drink shaker, secure the lid, and shake vigorously for about 20 seconds. Remove the lid from your shaker and strain into your chilled cocktail glass. It's better to leave a little room at the rim to avoid spilling - after all, you can always make more! Finally, garnish with a citrus twist from your lemon (or lime) peel. Not sure how to make a citrus garnish? See me demonstrate it here! What's a part? Well, your standard shot is 1.5 oz, so if you use that as your "part", you'll have 4.5 oz citrus vodka, 3 oz cranberry, and 1.5 oz each of triple sec and lime juice. These portions will yield between 2 and 3 drinks, depending on how large your cocktail glasses are. If you want more or less, just use larger or smaller parts, but don't fill your cocktail shaker all the way to the top or you're likely to make a mess!
